December 7, 2009:

The December 7th program was presented by Aly Boldt, Laura Froehish and Eshita Trivedi who are Juniors at Madison Central High School.  They were accompanied by school counselor, Diana Larson.  Their topic was on the "Close Up Program" which they attended in Washington DC and our Rotary Club helped sponsor.  They learned about issues that were being debated at the time and how the political system works in Washington.  They were able visit all the major sites in DC and be with other high school students from across the country.  There are 17 Madison Central High School students that have applied to attend the program this year so they are looking for support to help as many students as possible.  The cost is about $2,000 per student.

Linda FordNovember 9, 2009:

Linda Ford, Program Director; New Hope Day Service, spoke on the adult day program that is part of the Bethel Community.  By 2030, the population of seniors 65+ will double to 71 million.  New Hope enables elderly to remain home, and yet come to the adult day center where they can receive transportation, mental stimulation, physical exercise, nutrition, bathing, and help with medications.  Those 65+ receive services paid for by Title III-B through the state, and are asked to pay a donation, if they so choose.  New Hope has now opened a “satellite” program in Prairie View Apartments, four days a week.  Linda Ford can be contacted at 256-2912.

Jack Walters provided the group with a very informative power point presentation featuring Pattie Maes, MIT Media Head, who demonstrated to conference attendees, a gadget that one of her students developed that could in the future; provide seamless access to an unlimited amount of information using materials that cost them approximately $300, but what could ultimately be the price of a cell phone if marketed commercially.  The presentation can be found at Ted.com, and I would encourage you to visit this site to watch Ms. Maes’ presentation regarding what could be the next “techie” gadget to sweep the world.

Jay NiedertSeptember 28, 2009:

Jay Niedert reported on his trip to Haiti.  Jay described the trip that took place entailed traveling to a remote rural area in Haiti, approximately 40 miles from the city of Port of Prince to educate Haitians on the use of solar ovens.  The 40 mile trip by bus took approximately 5 hours due to the poor roads.  Currently many Haitians rely upon charcoal made from trees converted to charcoal as their source of cooking fuel, and that 40% of their income goes to purchasing this charcoal.  The environmental impact of converting trees to charcoal has been severe in that the trees being removed are not replaced ultimately causing erosion and ultimately inhibiting the once plentiful rainfall to not occur.
